Ep #130 Female Friendship in Your 40s: Why Girls' Trips Matter More Than Ever
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
You know that feeling when you've laughed so hard your face aches and your brain finally goes quiet?
Kristen recorded this one on the drive home from a girls' weekend, still buzzing, because she wanted to catch it before it faded.
This episode is about the magic of long-term female friendship, what changes about it in your late 30s and 40s, and the honest case for why these weekends away aren't indulgent; they're how you refill the cup.
Plus, a first look at something Mia and Kristen have been circling for a while: Unscripted, an in-person event for 40+ content creators.
Key Take Aways
- Joy isn't a reward you earn after the to-do list is done, it's part of how you stay functional. Treat it as maintenance, not indulgence.
- Long-term friendship changes shape with age, but the "we get it" shorthand between women who've known each other a long time doesn't disappear, it deepens.
- If you've been running on fumes, the fix isn't another system, it's booking the date, splitting the cost, and going.
- Content creators over 40 rarely get spaces built for them. Unscripted is Mia and Kristen building that room themselves.

Raw Car Chat Kickoff
SPEAKER_00Let's go. Let's go.
unknownLet's go. Let's go.
SPEAKER_01Alright, I wanted to capture this in its realest, rawest, most fabulous form because I am heading home on a drive, as you know, I love a fast and loose podcast.
How The Girls’ Trips Began
SPEAKER_01So I'm driving home from a girls' weekend. I went away with my ladies, my little amazing, little incredible group of mums that we went to school together, but we're all in different levels years at school. We all rode and some of them coached me, then I coached with them, then we all coached together, and we've just stayed friends ever since school. We are, I would like to say, one of the most randomly eclectic group of friends in terms of there is not a minute we're together where we are not hissing ourselves laughing. And we started a couple of years ago, it'd be nearly as shiver's 10 years ago, or longer than that, where randomly we just said one day, um, I said to the girls, just I don't even know why this started, but for some reason I thought it was a good idea to invite them all over to my house. Well, I was renting a house for a while before my parents knocked down this house. We were renting a house that was kind of run down, there was lots of space, it was pre-kids for me. And I just said to them, Do you guys want to come over? We'll have a little sleepover, we'll have some drinks, play some music, have some fun. And they're like, Yeah, great. So they came over for a sleepover, we set a mattress on the floor. It was just the most weirdly hilarious moment because we were like, we're grown ass women that are having a sleepover. And we just laughed and laughed and laughed. And from that moment onwards, then the next year, we did something else. And the year after that, it was one of the girls' 40th, 40th birthdays. And so we're like, let's go away. So we ended up going away to Renmark of the time in South Australia. We used to go there for rowing camps together. So it holds this special place in our heart. And that's just where it all started. So we'd go away every single year, and that was the beginning of every single year. We made sure that we would go away together. And then if anybody had a significant birthday, we'd make that event a little bit more significant. We'd do a little bit more or whatever.
Spice Girls Brunch And The Dance Floor
SPEAKER_01And I'm just driving home now from the weekend away. We went away for a Spice Girls brunch here in Adelaide. If you're from Adelaide, we went, if you saw us, I'm sorry. And it was a brunch in the middle of a Saturday afternoon from 11, from 12 to 1 was a bottomless brunch, and it was just one of those days. We stayed over on the Friday night. We had a hilarious night. We always buy something from team or buy something to kind of bond us and make it funny. We've got a group chat that is off tap. And from the Friday night until I'm literally driving home now, I've just had to stop to get like a triple shot of black cold coffee to get me home. We've just, we laughed and laughed and laughed. We were in bed last night by 10 o'clock. Up this morning, watched some Netflix and chill. But the point of this is I don't I think we underestimate the importance of filling our cups in that way. And yesterday when we were at this event, and look, it was what it was. It wasn't amazing. We made our fun of it. There was a dance floor. And if there's a dance floor, it's nothing matters to me. Like I'm here for a dance floor. But as I was even dancing on the dance room, there's all these women, it was a Spice Girls Lunch. So most of the women were over 40, or maybe late 30s or something like that. But there was a point where the dance floor got very hot, and I asked the lady, look, there's a lot of perimenopausal women here. Could we turn the aircon on? And the woman behind the bar kind of looked at me like, uh, what? And I was like, you just wait for your perimenopausal phase. But then some of the woman on the table across heard it. She was like, oh my god, yes, I finally someone understands us. So we were in a room. My point is being in a room with women, millennial, older millennial women, we get it. Like there's just such something that bonds us. I think in our minds, we're still 28, living our best life on the dance floor. But yet when I got home that night and I could hardly move, and when I sat down and stood up again, my knees were hurting so much. I was like, oh, I'm I'm not 28 anymore. Like you are 41 and like shit's happening. But the most, the I don't know, the most special part, but the part that got me thinking as I'm dancing on the dance
Brilliantly Unscripted Event Vision
SPEAKER_01floor was Mia and I have this dream of an event. And we haven't put it off as like later later, but it's just never felt right until now. And so this year we will be doing an event. It's gonna be brilliantly unscripted, is the idea around it. And it's gonna be for 40 plus creators to get together in a room where we can do some content creation, we can live our best life, and we can just bond together around the things that in our mind I think we're still 28 and living our best life, but we've also lived a life and created stories and created memories. And the idea of being brilliantly unscripted is that idea as a content creator 40 plus, we are in a space where we can, where part of us are nervous to be our ultimate self. Part of us are what will people think? What will they say? And so you get that overwhelming feeling of not wanting to maybe step into that true space of yours because content creation online is, you know, there's lots of younger content creators, content creators, and we can feel overwhelmed, feel like, is this our place? Does anyone care? What are be people gonna think? And we get in our heads. And I know every content creation does content creator does that, but for us millennials, us 40 plus creators, I think it's a little bit more difficult. And we do challenge ourselves and wonder like, what am I doing? Should I be doing this? This is the right thing. But when you're and when you're at home and you're just constantly creating content on your own, you get even more in your head. And so we wanted to create a space where we can all be together, have the same type of conversations, maybe create some b-roll for each other. We want to set up this event so it's not just, I mean, come listen, learn. It's more get in a room with people that understand you, collaborate with them, network with them, but also provide spaces where you can get some b-roll, you can get some photos taken, you can have content creators help you with your content. So they might take your phone, we might set up different booths, and they take your phone and then they hit content of you, and vice versa. But it's always gonna end, no matter what, it will always end with a dance floor. Because it wouldn't be an event that I have anything to do with if there wasn't a fucking dance floor, let me tell you. So after the high of this weekend and driving home and just realizing that my cup is overflowing, like the laughs, the just reminiscing, the the ability to just drop all responsibility and just be with women that get you, that celebrate you, that you can kind of I mean we re we reach we we rip each other to shreds in terms of the jokes we have, and but it's always led with kindness and we're always there for each other and we understand each other, we know that we're going through these different phases of our life, and some have kids that are moving out of home, some like me still have kids that are just starting and going through school, and and so it's this beautiful collaboration of of different parts of our life that just make an event and a moment in time like that so much sweeter when you're just with people that get you. And so this is, I don't know, maybe I'm drawing a line in the sand to make sure that we we take on this journey of how we build this event and we want to hear what you want from this event, and we want to invite you. It's gonna be in Melbourne, the first one will be in Melbourne. We're thinking November, and there will be a wait list coming to make sure that you get on that wait list. But I think all I wanted to say before I let this excitement leave my body and get home to my back to my normal life and things like that. I wanted to make sure I captured just how special it was to spend a weekend with just some of the most incredible women in my life and be completely free of any expectations, any responsibilities, any rules, and just enjoy those moments again. And I think that's really important. That's what we want this event to be like. We want it to be brilliantly unscripted so it can be fast and loose because fuck are we fast and loose? But there's something really magical in that.
Book The Date And Final Push
SPEAKER_01So if nothing else, this was just a podcast to be like, look, call up your girlfriends right now and just book a date and go away and stay over with them and take as many bags as we did, which for crying out loud, we had a boot full of about seven bags for two days. I think was like just go and be brilliantly unscripted with them. Just go and create a space and create memories that you can laugh and laugh and laugh and make sure that you bring that fun and that joy back into the things that you do. And even if it's just going somewhere, it doesn't have to cost a lot. You don't have to fly somewhere. You could go to a caravan park and stay somewhere and just split the costs and just make the call, book the date, have those friends, make those laughs. And if you're like, I don't know when this will be, well, come, November. Stick around, follow us on social media, make sure you get on that wait list because this event, after the event that I just had with these particular group of women, I want to make sure that what we bring to this brilliantly unscripted event is something that you will never forget. That it will sit with you in some part of your your heart and your soul and just where you go, fuck, I want to go again. I need to be around people like that. And that's all that I want this event to be, is for you to leave and just be in the car on your way home going, I need to be around those people again. Because that to me, that's everything, and that's that's what this is all about. So anyway, I'm gonna keep driving home. I've got to put my tunes on because I've got like 20 minutes before I get home, and then I'm back into full blown mum life. So I'm gonna have me some tunes, finish the weekend off, and yeah, call those friends and here stick around for November because we're gonna bring you something pretty fucking epic. I can just feel it. Shit Podcast. Absolutely so many good ones too.
